SYMPTOM

A Report contained multiple columns of figures; while printing the Report, it was observed that some of the columns were not printed. Further, the columns, which were printed, were the first few (starting from the left). This was particularly observed with Reports that were printed in Text mode. Besides, a printed output of a Data Warehouse query happened to exhibit the same problem.

CAUSE

A Report is printed strictly as per the format defined in the design, and text will not ‘wrap around’ when a line of detail on the Report does not get enough space to be printed. If the System does not get enough space to print a line of detail, then it ignores this portion, i.e., truncates the line of detail, and carries on to print the item that follows.

WORKAROUND

We advise that you should issue more printing space.

Here are a few pointers:

  1. Reports that have a graphic layout may be printed under Landscape mode. A Report, which is printed in Text mode (following its page layout properties), cannot be printed under Landscape mode. Such a Report always gets printed in the Portrait mode. Besides, when the output of a Data Warehouse query is directly sent to the Printer, it is printed under Text mode. (It will be observed that all Text mode outputs typically follow the ‘Courier New’ font)

  2. Change the page width by increasing the ‘Right Margin’. For text type design, you may select the Page Type as ‘Custom’ instead of some pre-defined sizes, like ‘80 column’ or ‘132 column’. So, you can increase the printing width as much as permitted by your printer.

  3. Design the Report with two rows of column Headers instead of one. Accordingly, each detail line will be physically split into two rows.

  4. If the output of a Data Warehouse query does not fit into the width, create an HRD Report – possibly a graphic one, using the Report Writer, and use it to take your printout.

  5. Export the output of the Data Warehouse query (or, a Report) to a file, open the file through some Text Editor/Word Processor, or any Spreadsheet software, and then, take the printout
